Diani and the south coast

Diani is the best-known beach on Kenya's south coast, in Kwale County. Getting there got easier with a direct airport and a bypass around the Likoni Ferry — here is what sources confirm.

About Diani

Diani Beach is one of Kwale County's top tourism sites, known for its white sandy beaches.

By air

Diani Airport, formerly Ukunda Airstrip, is run by the Kenya Airports Authority. After its runway was rehabilitated in 2022, airlines resumed direct flights there from Nairobi instead of flying to Mombasa and transferring by road.

By road from Mombasa

Since August 2024, the 17.5 km Dongo Kundu bypass has linked Mombasa and Kwale, so vehicles no longer need to cross the Likoni Ferry channel.

Information status: Verified

Before the bypass opened, a tour operator reported spending over four hours stuck at the Likoni Ferry channel.

If you're driving from Mombasa Island, check ferry waiting times and bypass conditions on the day before you choose a route, and leave plenty of time if you have a flight to catch.

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, further south in Kwale County, is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. A tourist jetty at Shimoni was built as a gateway to the park.
