It has extensive fringing and barrier coral reefs, and is a significant nesting area for endangered green and hawksbill turtles. Dolphins and whale sharks visit occasionally.

Its habitats include fringing reefs, coral gardens in the lagoons, seagrass beds, mangroves and mudflats. Marine life includes reef fish such as parrotfish and butterflyfish, humpback dolphins and sea turtles.

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, further south in Kwale County, is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. A tourist jetty at Shimoni was built as a gateway to the park.
