Arriving at Nairobi's JKIA: getting into the city

Most international visitors land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. Here is what the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), which runs the airport, says about getting from the airport to where you are staying.

Your options

KAA licenses taxi and transfer companies, which must be insured, to operate at its airports. They wait at designated taxi ranks, and several have desks in the domestic and international arrivals halls.

Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Bolt also serve the main airports, KAA says.

If you have a pre-arranged transfer, your driver waits outside the arrivals hall. Many hotels also offer transfers for their guests.

International and local car-hire companies operate in Nairobi and Mombasa, and parking is available at all KAA airports.

How taxi fares work

KAA advises using an official taxi or a transfer booked in advance, and agreeing the fare before you set off. Fares are per vehicle, not per person.

KAA notes that taxi fares depend on the destination, that you can pay in Kenya shillings or major foreign currencies, and that drivers may overcharge visitors, so it helps to know the usual fare before you travel.

KenyaPlus doesn't hold taxi fares or airport-to-city journey times: they depend on where you are going and on Nairobi's traffic. Ask your hotel what a fair fare is, or compare prices in a ride-hailing app before you leave the terminal.

Your first hours

Arriving late, or heading straight on to a park the same day? Book a transfer before you fly, and keep your accommodation's phone number and address to hand. A local SIM card needs your passport — see Money, phones and language in Kenya.

Confirm before you travel

  • Your transfer booking, pick-up point and driver's contact
  • The usual taxi fare to your accommodation (ask your hotel)
  • Your flight's arrival terminal
